“Better choices, better health” is the message the Mahoning County District Board of Health (MCDBOH) is sharing through the Healthy U - Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. Developed by Stanford University School of Medicine, Healthy U is a six week interactive workshop wherein small groups come together to learn:
The MCDBOH, in conjunction with the District Area Agency on Aging, is providing the Healthy U program free of charge to any Mahoning County resident living with a chronic illness or life-long condition, such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis, heart disease or hypertension. Research conducted by Stanford University shows that Healthy U participants experience improved symptom management, communicate better with their physicians and report improved overall health. Class participants report that the program is “life changing!” For more information or to register, call 330-270-2855 ext. 109.

- Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation;
- Appropriate exercises for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance;
- Appropriate use of medications;
- Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals;
- Nutrition;
- Decision making;
- How to evaluate new treatment options.
